The #1 Problem: Running Out of Time

The IELTS Reading test gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions across 3 passages. That's just 20 minutes per passage — and the passages get harder. Most students who score below Band 7 say time was their biggest problem.

The 15-20-25 Strategy

Instead of spending 20 minutes on each passage, try this allocation:

  • Passage 1: 15 minutes (easiest)
  • Passage 2: 20 minutes (medium)
  • Passage 3: 25 minutes (hardest)

This gives you more time for the difficult questions that are worth the same marks.

Skim Before You Read

Before diving into the questions, spend 2-3 minutes skimming each passage:

  • Read the title and any headings
  • Read the first sentence of each paragraph
  • Look at any diagrams, charts, or images
  • Identify the general topic and structure

This creates a mental map so you know where to find information later.

Scan for Keywords

When answering questions, don't re-read the entire passage. Instead:

  1. Identify keywords in the question
  2. Scan the passage for those keywords or synonyms
  3. Read carefully only the relevant section

Question Type Strategies

True/False/Not Given

  • TRUE = the passage says exactly this
  • FALSE = the passage says the opposite
  • NOT GIVEN = the passage doesn't mention this at all
  • Don't use your own knowledge — only what's in the text

Matching Headings

  • Read the headings first, then the paragraph
  • Cross out headings as you use them
  • Focus on the main idea, not details

Fill in the Blanks

  • Read the surrounding sentences carefully
  • Check the word limit (1 word? 2 words? 3 words?)
  • The answer must be grammatically correct in context

Don't Get Stuck

If a question takes more than 2 minutes, mark it and move on. Come back to it at the end. Every question is worth 1 mark — don't sacrifice 3 easy marks for 1 hard one.
